Emperor of Japan from 1926. He succeeded his
father Yoshihito. After the defeat of Japan
in World War II 1945, he was stripped of his
divine powers and made constitutional monarch
by the US-backed 1946 constitution. He was
believed to have played a reluctant role in
Tojo's prewar expansion plans. Hirohito ruled
post-war occupied Japan with dignity. He was
a scholar of botany and zoology and the
author of books on marine biology. He was
succeeded by his son Akihito.
